New Ride Heading for the Bend
« on: August 02, 2013, 09:01:07 PM »
Well I bit the bullet (or Big Bend bit me) so I bought a truck this week, something I can use for trips to Big Bend and for ranch use come deer season. My wife and I are planning a Labor Day weekend trip to test it out.  :great:

Oh, yeah, it's a 2012 Tacoma 4x2 SR5 Texas Edition w/ 18K miles. Might have to try a bit of River Road East or Juniper Canyon Road for starters.  :)

Very nice!

I have a new truck for the many upcoming trips I have planned for this fall, starting with Havasupai at the end of Sept, then BiBe in mid-Oct, hopefully a trip (or three) with some heavy-duties between then and Christmas, then BiBe again on Dec 26th. This will just about round out my 28 days for this year. 2 more planned for this spring as well.

It will be interesting to see if I get stopped and searched in my new Chevy; I have been stopped and searched during 7 of my 9 trips since April 2010 in my old '99 Tahoe Limited. I've grown to expect it so it really doesn't phase me meow.

Did you get Big Bend plates?
Ah Big Bend, we will soon return to reacquaint ourselves in our ritual of blood, exhaustion and dehydration. How can we resist the temptation to strip ourselves of the maladies of civilization?

Didn't realize Big Bend plates existed and wow the thought didn't cross my mind while doing the paperwork at Carmax. Those (or the horned toad) would be really cool.
The truck is a 2WD, but it least it has limited slip differential. That might help keep from getting stuck in sandy sections or help getting unstuck. I may look into an after market rear locker. Right now I want to get a tire pump and plug kit to deal with flats in the back country.
Homer, if you get an ordinary looking truck that the BP ignores, we won't have any more LEO encounter stories!
