My 1998 F150 at Fresno from a couple of trip reports.  Traded her in a few months ago for a new one. She never got stuck, never left us stranded and was still running like a champ. The worst problem she had in the park was my fault.  We were camped at Roy's Peak Vista, sans tarps or tents, when a sudden storm caught us by surprise.  We got soaked and decided to head to Terlingua to dry out.  Went too fast down Old Ore Rd., splashed some ponded water up into the engine and it started missing out on one of the cylinders.  Put an OBD II meter on it, figured out which cylinder, dried it out and we were good to go.  Someone got a good truck.

This is what happens when you  venture too far off the pavement along FM170 (before BBRSP was a state park) pulling a tandem axle trailer overloaded with camping gear looking for a secluded campsite.
Fortunately we had another truck to tow the trailer. (http://i777.photobucket.com/albums/yy60/DonsDoin/Miscellaneous/cowboy.gif)

This is getting good. Tell us more!  I wish there were photos of my 1962 VW Bug in the Bend but that was before I started taking pictures.  GREAT dirt road vehicle with those 15" wheels.  The 1968 Volvo 144 was also pretty competent but not like the Bug.

Buck, my first trip was in a friend's brand new 1971 Suburban.  Most excellent Big Bend vehicle.  Bet you wish you still had that Toyota . . . or do you?

Hoodoo, what were you thinking!?

Poor old truck. In 2010 i drove it out of Fresno camp at 5am with the river roat closed due to a rain  storm. It took one hour. the first two yrs. i took backroads, 03/04, i didn't have a spare tire. 2011, i'm taking it a little more easy on it. The scratches wax out, sort of.

Apparently there wasn’t a whole a lot of thinking going on that day. We were getting frustrated with not being able to find a decent camp close to the river. Many of the roads back then had locked gates preventing access. Besides, 4X4 will get you anywhere you want to go right?  :icon_rolleyes:  :eusa_doh:

Nice shorts Don! :icon_lol:

I'm liking this thread already.  Here's my old ride, a 2003 Toyota Matrix that I bought right off the delivery truck in April of 2003.  I drove it out to the park in Feb '09:

With a ground clearance of maybe 3" due to the 'ground effects', there was no way I could take that vehicle anywhere off pavement.  Heck, I had to be careful and not pull right up to a parking curb.

My favorite ride for Big Bend - 1981 Jeep CJ7.  She gets to ride a trailer up there and back, but she has traveled almost every back road in the park in fine style.

iCe, the YJ is going on the 'For Sale' road.  Can't drive two, and the old CJ is just too classic to let go.  IMHO, the CJ is the premiere off-road vehicle of the Jeep family.

Ay, after we had that happen at McKinney Springs near the end of the great freeze in February, Jimbob bought one of those external batteries/chargers.  An addition to the extra 5-gallon water jug, tow straps, jumper cables, 12 volt air compressor, tire plugs, etc. we normally carry.

At McKinney Springs, we had the advantage of having cell phone service, a luxury one doesn't have on the east side of the Chisos.  It's amazing how things seem to fail at the most remote locations.  How many days were y'all away from the truck?

Al

P.S. The hood still made for great shade!  It wouldn't surprise me if you weren't visited by the Border Patrol, a ranger or volunteer at that site daily . . . worst case hike to river road where there is a comparative plethora of traffic.

Now this is camping in the worst possible place to set up a camp...believe me. In the River banks of the Rio Grande. We were newbies back then. Here's my wife and I waiting on 12-24-11 in our 2001 Jeep Cherokee for the Basin road to open. We had planned to leave at 6:00 am for Houston, but the road was not opened until about 11:30 am until it was sanded. Main problem was very slippery conditions at Panther Pass due to snow and sleet which came in the previous afternoon and night. Will post report and more photos later.

When this thread started I was a little dissapointed because my vehicle had never been in Big Bend.  Neither had I.  I have been anxiously awaiting the day I could post my own "vehicle in Big Bend" picture.  Well, I'm thrilled to finally be able to join the club.

Here is a picture of my new truck approaching the McKinney ranch site on Old Ore Road.  As you can see, it is already pin striped which happend on one of the 2WD roads in BBRSP before I realized it.  Since the first pin stripes were already out of the way, braving Old Ore in the new truck was an easy decision.

And this is a picture at the end of Indian Head road just outside of the park.  Since you can see the park from the picture, hopefully this counts.

I'm working on a trip report which will hopefully arrive soon.

Just need to see more Mopar/Dodge/Jeep pics :)

I love exploring the back country of both the national parks and state parks.  The two parks are both beautiful and unique in their own ways but I always have the time of my life going to the 'high-clearance only' roads in the state park.

2003 Dodge 3/4 ton. Circa September 2004. We were camping in the Basin and it rained all night. We decided it would be a good time for a drive to Presidio the next morning.

If I remember right, this was after the Big Hill, but before Redford heading west.  I don't remember the name of this wash/arroyo.

I DO remember that I wasn't real happy about having my picture taken.

I finally got a vehicle worthy of heading off road in. The RDX was great, but I don't think any Acura has been made to tackle the likes of Black Gap.

In addition to having a great deal of clearance, 4x4, and all the 4x4 goodies that a Pro-4X has, it is also bear friendly.

No way! The true winner will be the shot that has a lion (or three) crossing the road next to your car in the park... And even then, I'm sure there'll be a way to top even that shot! :)

Ah perfect!  Looks like they would hold up pretty well in strong winds.  We had a major wind/dust storm while we were there this past Spring Break, and a canopy like that would have had to be anchored pretty well not to take wings and fly away...

I've never had the canopy up in really strong winds, probably 20-25mph tops.  You can stack some rocks on top of the plates for additional weight if you needed it.

I'm retiring the black truck. I looked at all of the 4WD vehicles that 2014 had to offer for almost two weeks. I was thoroughly disappointed so I started looking at used.  found a 2000 TLC (Land Cruiser) and I'll spend the rest of the year tweaking it for Colorado and Utah. In stock form it's fine for Bibe

This was shot when I was driving in last night. It has a long way to go but when I'm done It'll go anywhere I'm willing to go and then some. My favorite thing about it is that I can load all of my gar in it and still have the entire rear seat for passengers or whatever.

Nice dude!  I like that a lot.  What was the black truck?
Title: Re: pictures of your vehicle in big bend
Post by: iCe on June 16, 2014, 12:42:21 PM
Thank you. I love the Land Cruiser already. It rides nice and it's rock solid even with 150k on the clock

The "black truck" is my '08 Silverado Crew Cab 4WD Duramax. It's got almost 260k on the clock. The biggest reason for switching to the TLC isn't the mileage on the truck, it's the carrying capacity. I have a lot more room for in cab carrying capacity in the TLC than I do the black truck with the seats folded up. I still have the second row seats open with all of my gear in the back. With a new roof rack (haven't bought that yet) I have tons of room for things like a second spare, water fuel, tent, etc.

The trucks off road ride isn't what I'm looking for or as good as the TLC. Fuel mileage is about the same but diesel cost is higher (except in the park, prices were high this weekend).

I think I put this pic here already but I don't know how far back it is

Nice Jeep! Did you air-down for the rocks? Any sidewall issues on the street tires?

Didn't air down at all. Underestimated the road, should have though. No sidewall issues at all. Thanks for the kind words

Here's a shot from this past weekend... Sunday the 6th to be exact. Note the upper center portion of the frame:

This was taken in that clearing just across from the bear crossing sign. Ironically I'd mentioned that I needed an updated photo since I no longer had the last vehicle that was photo'd when I had a similar bear/car encounter.

That was the first place in the park I saw bears - a sow and two cubs - before the sign was installed. Around 1989 or so. Haven't seen another one there since.  :icon_frown:

Not our vehicle (though we were drooling) but we saw a sweet custom Toyota expedition vehicle in the Chisos Basin parking lot (March 2015) - and it was from Switzerland!

Would have loved to seen the inside, but never saw the owners...

Good morning folks, I managed to snap a couple pics of my truck during my recent trip to Big Bend on 01/15 thru 01/18.  Starting on River Road East where it begins near Rio Grande Village, we traveled east and made our way to the Mariscal Mine.  On the way, we took a break and parked in this large creekbed before eventually making it to the mine.

One of my favorite spots was a cemetery we found with 3-4 graves.  One of which was marked with a  cement cross.  A section of the road allowed us to pull aside and park while walked around taking pics of the graves and enjoying the scenery.

I got a new vehicle and I just got back from the park, so I thought it'd be fitting to update this thread as well :)

I also realized that I had not posted the former vehicle's picture here... I guess I was waiting to see if I could score a bear in that shot as well, but this will have to do:

Spent the week between Xmas and NYE in the State Park.
Got to hit Nowhere.  The ride was pretty easy to the sign.
We also hit the Magnesium and the Uranium mine that same day.  Lots of fun on those two. Don't go in a big group on them, you will have a tough time turning around.
Also of note is Paseo Al Solitario trail.  It is an unmaintained 4x4 trail and worth every penny!   My favorite in the park so far!

Thanks!
It's a chinese knock off.
50 inch LED bar.
A buddy of mine gave it to me for free for modeling his lightbar mounts he fabricated.
He was a big fabricator of bumpers and other FJ related items, then got a job offer he couldn't refuse he said.

Not mine but absolutely outrageous! This belonged to a German, who shipped it to Halifax, Canada, and told me he was driving from there to Argentina. He bought it from the East Germans after the Germanies merged. It was used by the East Germans to patrol the Berlin Wall. He converted it to a mobile home (February, 2013).

I will be on my way there tomorrow. But beginning to rethink the camp site cause I'm familiar with Big Bend but my but isn't.So I saw where the camp site is two hours from the road. And I don't think that would be wise with it being his first Big Bend trip.Any suggestions for a site that is not primitive and has water access?

If you want to camp, but still have facilities, can I suggest Rancho Topanga?
It's between the two parks and close to Terlingua Ghost Town.
http://www.ranchotopanga.com

My first time to the Bend we basecamped there and drove to all the different sites in the parks.

Sorry if anyone gets upset as this isn't a 4x4, but here's a few of my Triumph in the park a couple of weeks ago.  Weather was perfect and my neighbors in the Basin campground were quiet, so couldn't ask for a better time.
