Title: Tire Recommendations

Anybody have any suggestions on the best tires for the back roads?

Do y'all run different tires when it's wet/muddy vs. when it's dry and more rock/gravel?

if it's muddy in big bend, what about 5 minutes and it'll dry out.  no mud tires are necessary unless you plan on being on River Road the whole time during raining season.   I have the BF Goodrich all-terrains on my jeep they've always worked fine during any situation!

This should be the official tire of BBNP.

If you're on the River Road and a big storm is coming, tires are no longer the issue.

  Out of personal experience, if your planning to get in to tough 4 wheeling,definetly BFgoodrich, in all it?s models for 4wd: All terrains, Mud terrains, Rockcrawlers...then comes the next phase...BUDGET..how much money do I have to invest in "new shoes" for my vehicle.

  I for one have in my F-350, BFG Mud Terrain?s...but the real advise here is this: Go to your local 4 wheel parts store and purchase your lifetime garantee policy on a new set of tires. It?ll cost you an extra $ 30.00 dlls p/tire, but believe me...it?s darn well worth it.

  They will change them, policy on hand, no questions asked and you wuill always have a set of tires, new, when ever you want them. I for one, have changed (2) tires so far and i purchased them just this past November 2005.

I've been very happy with the Good Year Wrangler AT's that come standard on the Avalanche Z71.  When it's time to replace, I go with the same thing.  Good wear, good off road, good ride going down the road,  etc.  I've learned my lesson on two things off-roading in West Texas - of course, not really "off-roading" per say, but driving the dirt/gravel roads.  Check the air pressure often, make dang sure that the gauge is correct (last trip the fancy dial gauge that I had was off by as much as 20lbs, have a plug kit and fill a flat handy, get a good jack and not the POS that comes as OEM.   When I get a new vehicle now, I go to Discount Tire and get the life time warranty, etc. on it.  $90 up front seems to be cheaper than paying for new tires.  Last two trips to West Texas I've had flats and destroyed the tires.    I usually keep the Avalanche in 4x4 Auto when I'm on the roads, had a good buddy that "spun" his tires going up a hill at BGWMA and shredded the tire.  If I should get stuck in 4x4 Auto - high, then I've got 4x4 low as insurance to get out, plus tug-em-straps, etc.

For trucks use LT rated tires (light truck) D or E range.   These are like 8 or 10 ply construction and are made stronger than P (passenger car) rated tires.

This way the stress of running at lower pressures on the backroads is not a problem.

I had two flats with P rated OEM 1/2ton chevy tires in the first 10 miles of rough rocky backroads.    Sharp rocks penetrate the tread more easily on P tires.

Never again will I keep P rated tires on my truck.

I can't say for sure outside of the park, but I noticed a dozen or so tires in the garage at the Panther Junction store.  Alpine probably has a few stores, as does Fort Stockton.  Might be a few available in Marathon.

I think it depends on what you are looking for.  I could have used a new Goodyear tire this last trip to the West Texas Trans Pecos Big Bend Region.  Toms Tire Repair in Presidio, old Texaco Station, told me that the closest place was the WallyWorld in Fort Stockton.  I imagine you can get "running tires" at various places around there.  I don't know if Stillwell still has any "spare tires" or not, Nacho used to fix Flats @ Stillwell, but the last several times I was there - there was no Nacho.   8)  I don't know what "exists" in Alpine in the way of repair stores, etc. - but I bet you could find a tire there - heck there is enough people with cars and people with cars need tires and repairs.

also, always be sure to carry a tire plug and a 12v air pump for the backroads.  i was stranded at Old Ore and Mckinney once when a stick penetrated my tire. my spare was flat too  :?

ever since then, i also carry my plug kit which is good for 90% of your tire deflation problems....plug it and go! saved me more than once allready ;)

Good points.
1.  Plug kit with different sized plugs located in an easily accessable place quickly.
2.  a GOOD, not cheapo, 12 volt air pump that will handle truck tires quickly.
3.  Several cans of fix-a-flat - sometimes even with a plug you will get a leak.
4.  A darn good floor jack for an SUV, if you have an SUV.  The POS OEM jacks that come on vehicles are worthless.  (POS=Piece of sht, OEM=original equipment manufacture) - that standard thing they call a jack that they give you with your truck or car.  
5.  Jack stands.
6.  A full blown tool chest.
7.  Of course, Bob Villa's favorites - if it moves and shouldn't - duct tape.  If it doesn't move and should, WD-40.
8.  Check the darn spare tire before you need it!  If you are smart and you have a truck, the valve stem points down so you can access it easily.
9.  Check your tires daily - a slow leak can be found, plugged, or filled before it becomes a real problem.  Would be a real btch to fix a flat at spots on black gap road, going up/down from the Basin, etc.
10.  Shovel and tow strap.
11. Spare fuses, etc.   (nothing like getting stuck out in the middle of no where for the lack of a 15 cent fuse).

Short of pulling a transmission, I can fix a lot of things in the field - much cheaper than getting a tow truck to Marathon from along the river road.  Not sure what my on-star would do if I was broke down along the river road.

There is no finer, more rugged tire than the BF Goodrich All-Terrain. Have used them for more than 20 years with never a flat after seeing them used by the professional off-road racers in the California desert. If they can run at 100 mph down arroyos there, they will work for you anywhere. They wear out, eventually, but that is it.
