Any info on Talley?
« on: April 23, 2011, 09:56:40 AM »
I was looking at some pics of views from Mariscal Mountain rim down to the river, and it is one I have to do. But I wonder if Talley is a safe place to camp overnight?
It's right at the river, so...

For that matter, is it even safe to park our vehicle unattended at the trail head near Talley while we take the hike?

I hiked Mariscal Rim/Cross Canyon (not down to river though) with two buddies in late Feb; we zoned behind the Solis sites and drove around to Talley for the hike early morning of the 26th.

We did the hike then retrieved the truck on the 27th and had no problems with the truck. The desert is very sparse in that area, so your camp may be hard to conceal near Talley.

We were concerned for our mtn bikes/camp, but were able to find some good density off the Solis road which concealed our camp (about 1/2 mi in) and bicycles well.

I have yet to do a more detailed account of that hike, but the short thread I did do can be found here:

Also, I have a few photos of the hike on my flickr page:

Ah Big Bend, we will soon return to reacquaint ourselves in our ritual of blood, exhaustion and dehydration. How can we resist the temptation to strip ourselves of the maladies of civilization?
