I'm taking my 10-year old grand son on his first backpacking trip out Mule Ears trail to Cookies Camp this coming Saturday. Does anyone know if Mule Ears Spring is running?

Good old Mule Ears is still flowing in spite of the drought ....
the vicinity of the spring gets used pretty heavily, camp a short distance away
and give the wildlife access to the water.  Have a great hike .......

Ooh!  There is a very nice spot to camp about .25-.5 miles past the spring.  There is a large cairn which marks where one would turn right from the trail for a short jaunt to a small escarpment, which is easy to climb down.  I call it "The Spot"...the first place I camped in Big Bend years ago!

Just a suggestion!

Regretfully, we did not make it out to Mule Ears Spring on our recent trip.  I had started a series of photos which shows how foliage around the spring has changed since April 2010, as well as the rocks which did form a pool about 15' (perhaps a little less) from where the water comes over the small bluff.  Here is my most recent photo, from April 2011:

The spring was flowing, but in general the desert was very dry in April.  However, the drainage off the spring was quite green!  There was a good bit of wildlife in the drainage...we saw some beautiful deer and a few javelinas!

I love this area!  Have a great trip and take a lot of photos!

It's good to see you on BBC, Reece!

Ah Big Bend, we will soon return to reacquaint ourselves in our ritual of blood, exhaustion and dehydration. How can we resist the temptation to strip ourselves of the maladies of civilization?

Reece,

How'd the trip go?  :eusa_whistle: We need a picture or two for Homero, plus coordinates for Cookie's Camp, and then tell us a yarn!

Best regards,
