Source of lat/long coordinates
« on: June 07, 2011, 09:32:20 AM »
First of all let me say that I love this message board...I'm so glad I discovered it.

I want to take my son on an off road drive and camping trip so we are planning to go to Big Bend in a couple of weeks and take the Jeep on the River Road. We've never been to Big Bend before but it is something that I've always wanted to do. Growing up it always felt like camping in Big Bend was a Texas rite of passage but I never got around to it.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knew a good source of latitude and longitude coordinates for various locations in the park. Specifically, I'd like to find the coordinates for the Dominguez Trailhead primitive campsite. Having never been to the park before I have no idea on how well various campsites such as Dominguez are marked by signs (if any at all). If there are signs pointing to the campsites along the River Road I won't sweat it too much, though the anal part of me would still like the coordinates. After all, I've got all this fancy gps stuff and it would be just fun to play with it.

I'm not particularly attached to the Dominguez campsite...I have heard that the ones further off the River Road tended to be better than the ones on it.  From the map I have it appeared to be off the River Road but not too awfully far, which was the only reason I chose it. If anyone has any suggestions I'm certainly not too proud to take them!

Thanks,

Chris

They're well marked. All the turnoffs feature metal signs and/or large signs surrounded by rocks.

As for coordinates, this thread is a good start.

Thanks Jeff!

Sheesh, I even tried to search for a thread on coordinates to save anyone the trouble. Nobody will ever accuse me of being a computer hacker!

Or use the park map to locate and zoom in on it with Google Earth then write down the coordinates.

I think the Search Box is date-limited. If you search for "coordinates" there, you get this thread. If you use the Advanced Search (You get to that by clicking "Search" in the row of links above the "Copyright Notice" at the top of the page.), you get 8 pages of results.

If you are going to car camp at primitive sites, get a copy of the Backcountry Road Guidehttp://bigbendbookstore.org/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=103&products_id=34

I like to use http://mapper.acme.com/.  I like that the satellite and topo maps are interchangeable, and the topos still show some features which I believe have been removed from more recent topo maps.

So I guess my suggestion here is the same as Al's; one could find it on one of these sources and get the coordinates from there.
Ah Big Bend, we will soon return to reacquaint ourselves in our ritual of blood, exhaustion and dehydration. How can we resist the temptation to strip ourselves of the maladies of civilization?

You and your son will have a great time.  Jeeping in the Bend is one of my favorite things to do.   Bring more water than you think you'll need and for Pete's sake post a trip report when you come back!
