thanksgiving roadside site availability
« on: October 29, 2011, 02:36:40 PM »
My family and I are coming back to big bend for another thanksgiving week long trip.  We were there about 4 years ago, but did it in an rv, and I can't remember whether the backcountry sites looked full or not.  This year we want to bring the tent and try for a roadside campsite, but we can't get there any sooner than late sunday afternoon before thanksgiving.  Is there a good chance of getting a roadside site or should I be planning for plan b?  My inlaws are going up on Friday and will be staying in lajitas resort in their rv, so I could maybe have them scout us a site and pull the permit to ensure we get something...Any ideas suggestions or advice?

I think that far in advance you should be able to get a spot.
Wake me when it's time to go.

imho it will be pretty crazy from the Friday before Thanksgiving thru the Sunday after(Nov 18-27th). I would have a list of backcountry sites you would be willing to stay at so you could go with plan G if needed.

I am assuming by roadside you mean backcountry and not zone camping.

Permits can only be written 24 hours in advance if you are getting one for someone else.

Yes, backcountry only.  I think just to be safe we'll have my inlaws try to get us a site Saturday morning and just hope for the best.  They want us to camp with them, but the whole reason we're leaving the rv at home this trip is so we can get away from the noises and distractions of other campers and try to enjoy some peace and quiet...

The earlier the better. I would send them with a list of possible sites. Also be sure to give them your vehicle make/model and license plate, I assume they have your address and phone number  :icon_wink: They will need all that to get your permit.

For us the backcountry is the best place for peace and quiet!
Have a great trip, take lots of pictures and let us know how it went!
