What are the chances of going Feral?
« on: October 20, 2010, 11:08:16 AM »
OK, so I've done much hiking, climbing and camping this past year--prolly more than any other year.  So far that is.

Anyway, I can't think about dang near anything else!  I want to be outdoors all the time.  When given a chance to stay in a cabin, hotel, or someone's house, I would rather camp in their yard or off the road somewhere.

Anyone else gone feral like this?

Man, I am so ready to go back!  I haven't even finished uploading the trip log to the forum from our last venture! Next time (~January 25th) it's Marufo Vega, Mule Ears (of course, but only day hike and not camping there), and maybe Juniper Canyon.  We'll probably work in the Chimneys (there and back), too.  Reading through my trip log has really got me fired up!

Ah Big Bend, we will soon return to reacquaint ourselves in our ritual of blood, exhaustion and dehydration. How can we resist the temptation to strip ourselves of the maladies of civilization?

it happened to me in college.  when asked where my roommate and i lived we jokingly replied, "various wildlife refuges and state parks."   i remember many mornings waking up in my hammock, waiting until the last second then making a mad dash for the truck and back into town for classes.

i can relate to wanting be out of doors.

i think the ability to go w/o showering might considered feral for civilized folk.  say you do a 14'er or two then can camp and eat dinner, etc.  W/o showering you can feel good doing another one and continue the streak w/o showering day after day.  now that might be feral.  if one can keep up backpacking and ascending mountains or hiking through a desert, w/o showering and live out of doors, i'd say they'd deserve the medal of "feral-dom."

It can happen and you've got to be careful with the more domesticated among us. When I came home from my last hiking trip, we had a house full of kinfolks and not enough beds. I was feeling hairy from my time in the wilds so I volunteered to sleep out in the yard, much to my wife's dismay and horror. "What would our guests think? They're all sleeping in beds and you're grubbing around in the yard like an animal!" Sadly, it took a little contrition on my part to get back into her good graces. She had to scrub the out of doors off me to get me fit for polite company again and seated at the dining room table.
