La Noria 2
« on: February 04, 2013, 04:45:07 PM »
LA2

The La Noria primitive campsites are located along the southern portion of the Old Ore Road.

Site Name    LN-1    LN-2
Vehicles    1    1
Persons    6    6
Horses    no    no

How to Get There
Via the Old Ore Road, this site is 4.9 miles from the main paved road to Rio Grande Village and 0.4 miles past the Ernst Tinaja turn-off. The site is 21 miles from the north end at the Dagger Flat Auto Trail. The access road to the campsites is on the west side of the Old Ore Road. LN-2 is .15 miles past the LN-1 campsite.

Usual Road Conditions
High clearance is highly recommended throughout the year. 4-wheel drive may be necessary following heavy rains. Ask a Park Ranger for the latest road conditions.
Current road conditions...

Ground Cover/Shade
No shade is available. The area is covered with yucca, creosote bush, candelilla, and lechuguilla. Both sites are somewhat protected by the surrounding hills.

Views
LN-1: Good views of Chilicotal Mountain, the Dead Horse Mountains, and from a nearby ridge-the Chisos Mountains.
LN-2: Great views of the Chisos Mountains, good views of the Dead Horse Mountains, and a bit of the Sierra del Carmen.

River Access
None.

Cautionary Notes
There is a wash north of the Ernst Tinaja turnoff on the way to the La Noria campsites. It is sandy and deep and should only be attempted with a high-clearance vehicle. High clearance vehicles are highly recommended.

Remarks
In the sandy flats of nearby Tornillo Creek once stood the village of La Noria. Spanish for well, La Noria refers to the tinaja (Ernst Tinaja) which is located east of the village site.

2 miles north of La Noria along the Old Ore Road is a ravine. In the bottom lies Carlotta Tinaja. After rain, this tinaja holds water and provides for all manner of wildlife. Water is not potable.

A backcountry use permit is required (available at visitor centers). Campers are responsible for regulations listed on the permit. Camping is in designated sites for minimal impact on the surrounding vegetation.

It's really green! Little yellow flowers everywhere. I have an ocotillo in bloom while most of the others are leafed out. Weird.
