Paint Gap 4
« on: February 04, 2013, 04:51:42 PM »

The Paint Gap Road is located approximately 6 miles west of the Panther Junction Visitor Center, along the north side of the road. Four campsites are located along the road, three of which are generally accessible to all vehicles.
Site Name    PG-1    PG-2    PG-3    PG-4
Vehicles    1    2    1    2
Persons    4    6    6    4
Horses    no    no    no    no

How to Get There
The Paint Gap Road is located approximately 6 miles west of the Panther Junction Visitor Center, along the north side of the road. PG-1 is 1 mile from the pavement. PG-2,3 are located approximately 2 miles from the pavement. PG-4 is located within the "gap" approximately 2.5 miles from pavement.

Usual Road Conditions
The Paint Gap Hills Road is generally in good condition and is accessible to all vehicles throughout the year except past campsite #3 (PG-3) where high clearance is required for passing through Paint Gap.
Current road conditions...

Ground Cover/Shade
No shade available at PG-1 and PG-4. Moderate ground cover at PG-2 and PG3 due to thick surrounding vegetation.

Good views of the Chisos Mountains from PG-1,2,3. Views of Paint Gap Hills from PG-2,3,4. Dripping Spring and an old ranch site are located at the end of the road beyond the Paint Gap. Paint Gap shows a wide array of colors in Tornillo Creek to the North.Water Sources
None. There is NO water anywhere near the Southwest Rim of the Chisos. It is vital that you carry adequate water for drinking, cooking, and washing. Plan on at least one gallon/person/24 hours.

River Access

Cautionary Notes
The road past campsite PG-3 requires high-clearance vehicles.

A backcountry use permit is required (available at visitor centers). Campers are responsible for regulations listed on the permit. Camping is in designated sites for minimal impact on the surrounding vegetation.

It's a great site and on my short list especially when we must head home the next day:

The road to this site is a bit more narrow and rougher than the lesser Paint Gap sites but darned well worth the extra drive if you have a high clearance vehicle.

Not a great picture- if it's even really a picture.  Sheltered from east/west winds is a plus.  In cold months you're also sheltered from the warmth of the sun in the morning and evening.

Very cozy spot.

High clearance, schmigh clearance.

Road is not that bad, imo.  I'd take our 2006 Ford Freestyle down that road without a thought.  Don't know that I would push pass PG4, though.

Not our campsite, but drove by scouting for future trips... looks really nice, and sheltered as others have said...
