If anyone has coordinates for any of the backcountry campsites, feel free to add them to the appropriate topics. Trying to spot some of them via satellite imagery is easier said than done.

I have a few Trails Illustrated maps collected across the years. It seems that on my latest one (2009) the Rattlesnake Mountain campsite appears (wasn't there on the 2002 or '96 maps), and the Chimneys West campsite is gone (it was on the 2002 map and '96 map).
I don't think I saw a sign for Rattlesnake Mountain campsite on Old Maverick road this last November, and I'm sure I saw it in 2010.

During my last two backpacks into the High Chisos, I've gotten the co-ordinates of many of the campsites there.  The co-ordinates for the Boot Canyon, Boulder Meadow 1 to 4, and the Pinnacles campsites are the location of the beginning of the spur trails to these groups of campsites, as at the time I didn't feel like going down the spur trails to get the co-ordinates for each individual campsite (I might do this in the future).  Southeast Rim 3 and 4 are right next to each other, so I have only one pair of co-ordinates for both.  The co-ordinates are in the format Ndd mm ss.s Wddd mm ss.s, where d=degrees, m=minutes, and s=seconds, N meaning latitude north and W meaning longitude west.

Boot Canyon 1 to 4: N29 14 36.7 W103 17 48.8
Boulder Meadow 1 to 4: N29 15 35.7 W103 17 45.2

Lord willing, I will be driving the backroads next week and will gather up as many as I can. I was also thinking that Google maps is fairly accurate for that task.
Everything is in walking distance if you have enough time.

My idea is to have a link to a map for each campsite. Having them in decimal degrees makes that easier. For example, here's the Chisos Mountains Lodge:
http://mapper.acme.com/?ll=29.27053,-103.29929&z=15&t=H&marker0=29.27053%2C-103.29929%2CChisos%20Mountains%20Lodge

Will do. Where we go will depend on where we find a site. Our plan is to arrive on Friday.

Just got back from a visit to the park.  My friend and I visited 16 back country sites (including BA 2*), almost all on River Road/Black Gap/Glen Spring Road.  We took several pictures at each of these, showing the site itself plus the views in each direction from the site.  Made some notes about each, too.  I'll get around to posting these, hopefully in a few days.

*Glad to see that Buenas Aires 2 is closed.  Didn't realize that until now; when we visited it last week we were thinking, "why the heck would anybody stay here?".
Wake me when it's time to go.

Sweet Lance!  That took a lot of work to put together.  I really like having the zones overlayed, that map is hard to find and usually not very detailed.  Thanks!   :eusa_clap:

Backcountry Zones Overlay Image that provides name, code, and capacity for each zone.  Un-check the box to hide the overlay image.

Lance,

I'm curious about the overlay.  Is it a geotiff or geopdf or done some other way?

Thanks.

Thanks.

It's just a jpeg I snipped out of the actual backcountry zone map.  I overlayed it by adding an overlay in google earth, then positioning it to match the NP border as best I could.

Ditto Lance, very nice,  :eusa_clap: Thanks!!! :13:

(Yeah, I'm late to the party, but no less appreciative.  :eusa_dance:)

edit: OK, color me even more impressed  :great: :eusa_clap: , I didn't realize that the sites are cross linked here to the board
and pictures if available. Very nice indeed. A wonderful planning tool.

Isn't it great when Richard and kevint get an idea and then it snowballs big time?
