The name "Big Bend" refers to the great U-turn the Rio Grande makes here in southwest Texas, changing from a southeasterly flow to northeast flow. For more than 1,000 miles, the Rio Grande forms the international boundary between Mexico and the United States; Big Bend National Park administers approximately one-quarter of that boundary and includes 118 miles of the river as part of its southern boundary.  

The 801,163-acre park draws only 327,000 visitors per year making Big Bend one of the largest (15th largest) and least visited of America's national parks. If you haven't had an opportunity to visit this land of mountains, desert, and incredible diversity of plant and animal life, I hope you'll enjoy a visit in the near future.
