Big Bend on Facebook
« on: November 10, 2008, 03:10:06 PM »
For those of you that are on Facebook, last August I started a Big Bend National Park Facebook page. There are some outstanding photos posted, as well as a few videos. Here's the link:

Thanks, Casa Grande!  I feel like I've been in some horribly humid place, and now I'm back in the dry air and clear light of the desert.

And of course, remember to be careful out there when using MySpace, Facebook, etc. They're being targeted by the bad guys:

P.S. You need to recruit a few photographers to hang out here that have submitted photos there. Some great shots!

We went out to the park last July. We are from CT, so figured that this would be our only chance to go! Definitely was an experience to remember! We wanted to do something that not everyone does when visting, so we hiked to Cattail Falls. This is where we had a near death experience.
We just about got to the falls when it started to pour! It rained heavily for 10min or so, then cleared up. Just a passing shower I guess. Then my fiance' decides to take a short dip in the pool at the bottom of the falls. The water wasn't pouring down the falls to heavily, it hadn't rained much that year before we got there. All of a sudden a huge boulder fell from the top of the falls and fell into the pool of water! I screamed for him to get out of the water "RUN!!!" I said. We got as far away as possible from the falls, when another few boulders fell off the top. The rocks must have shifted after the downpour! Luckily for us we came out ok. We immediately headed back up the trail!

My computer has been acting zombie-like for a while, but I don't think it's the Facebook virus - The OS is corrupted, and I don't have enough memory to install a newer version. My computer is around 8 years old, so it's time to do like Shane says and "spend, spend, spend!" and get a new one.

Yeah, some of those photos are great. Kristal Moreland contributed many good ones, but I haven't heard from her lately. She works for Forever Resorts and was scheduled to leave Big Bend at the end of the year, so she might be gone. Eric Walker put up a few very nice photos of flooding in Boot Canyon and what has to be one of the biggest Vinegaroons ever. Here's a website with more of his photos:

Thanks, Ay Chi. Something like that happened to me once in the Grand Canyon. I was on a raft trip, and after a heavy rain we looked up and saw some rocks falling. They were several thousand feet up when we saw them, and we started the motor (yes, I was on one of the big motor rafts) and headed downstream as fast as we could. The rocks hit the river exactly where we had been a minute before...
