on both our visits the place had a creepy emptiness to it, like they're waiting - still waiting - for the rush of clientele to come and discover its charms.

I Tell You, Presidio Has Great Mexican Food...

but we did stop for one of the finest true Mexican meals we've ever had at The Patio Restaurant along the business district in Presidio. Wonderful food, and authentic, and delicious. We'd happily move to Presidio and get fat on that food if there was a good job for me there.

I've never had the pleasure of dining at The Patio, but BBH and I can both testify on the merits of El Alamo....

Ruidosa, a tiny 'town' tucked into a small section of flat space between the mountains and the river. On our first visit in 2004, no one was home,
 - sounds about right, no one home....

Interesting...

There's a town in Mexico just over the border; we were told that while it's okay for Americans to walk over the footbridge, it's technically illegal to come back that way as it's not an official border checkpoint. We were also told that the locals will look out for you and let you know when the Border Patrol isn't around, so getting back and forth is not as troublesome as it seems.

This is a very rare instance of a highway 'dead-ending'. Very few places in the United States do this. But does it really end? Yes, the paved FM-170 ends, but a continuation road called Chispa Road goes on from here.
 - always wanted to make that road to the end.... 8)

I've got several pics just like they have on their site!  We must be the same type of photographers - taking pictures of signs, etc.
Here's my buddy Dr. T outside of town and a long ways from camp...

Here's my buddy Robert C driving Big Red...  Out Bumping Down the Highway...

I really like how they have their website laid out.  Interesting on how they have divided up the state.

Ten Points and go to the head of the class!  Actually, it should be in the form of a question "What is LaHideous", but since you said "LaHideous" instead of Lajitas the judges will give it to you.   \:D/

It is a neat website...did not even know they had divided up the state as shown.

As Shanea mentioned, El Alamo is a great restaurant.  Highly recommend.  Get the enchiladas.

Great idea, Shanea!  I did not even think of that.  Thanks for inviting them to the board.

Scott Surgent is pretty active on summitpost, and I've talked to him in the past on a couple of peaks.  He has climbed a mind-boggling amount of county high points, with the only one missing in West Texas being Chinati peak (Presidio County).  Pretty interesting hobby.
