South Rim Weather Station (no longer there)
« on: February 23, 2006, 11:04:53 PM »
I just stumbled across this URL...

http://www.met.utah.edu/cgi-bin/droman/meso_base.cgi?stn=TR486

This is apparantly a weather station situated near the South Rim.  I've never seen a link to it on the Daily Report before.  It must have been fun packing that gear up the mountain and setting up the station.

I've always wondered how cold it was getting up in the Chisos overnight; now I can keep an eye on it.

Moderator note:  This weather monitor has since been moved out of the park. :(

The MesoWest stations are pretty cool.  While killing time at my folks' house in Austin during the Run from Rita I discovered a station just a few blocks from my house.  Apparently it's someone's private setup in their backyard.

Here's the list of stations in Texas:  MesoWest Texas
I've had the Chisos Basin one bookmarked for quite a while.

And the Panther Junction Wx station is at

http://raws.wrh.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/roman/meso_base.cgi?stn=PJNT2&unit=0&time=LOCAL

By the way, having the parameter &time=LOCAL rather that GMT makes it a bit easier to read/interpret (for me at least).

Good point.  I was just too lazy to modify it.  I work on the space shuttle program so I'm pretty used to seeing GMT.  Shortening the URL to just http://raws.wrh.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/roman/meso_base.cgi?stn=PJNT2 works for me as well.

Given the crazy weather across the state, I thought I would check the temperature at south rim.  Instead of the most recent observation, it has the message "There is no data in the database for TR486 during the requested time period."  Did someone trip over the extension cord?

Evidently the weather station did not belong to the park and whoever loaned it wanted it back.
The opinion expressed above is my own and not that of the National Park Service or the Federal Government.

That's a bummer. Wonder how much those things cost.  Maybe we could all pitch in and buy one...make it the BigBendChat.com weather station at South Rim.

I like that Alchemist2000!  I like your train of thought.  You, like me, like to get others to help stimulate this economy and spend money.  Let's put up a weather station with a webcam.  We can find out the technology used by the Texas Big Horn Sheep group on their remote webcam.   Their webcam also has current weather conditions also!

TOO COOL!  Ain't technology great!   8)

49.8 degrees would sure feel nice right now!
