Weather in Big Bend
« on: August 15, 2006, 04:29:36 PM »
Just happened to peek at the PJ weather station this afternoon....I see that a wind shift this afternoon as dropped the temp from the 90's to 77 at the moment.  Nice!

I am a bit of a weather nut...spend at least a few moments each day on a number of weather sites.

I like to check this extended forecast page every once in a while:
http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/predictions/814day/
and also this one...
http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/predictions/multi_season/13_seasonal_outlooks/color/churchill.html

Also, the NEXRAD section of http://www.wunderground.com has be best features of any site...especially if you like to track storms.  Check it out and you'll see what I mean.

Here's a link for Accuweather.com for the park's zip code (79834).

And of course, in addition to the Panther Junction station Vince mentioned, don't miss the Chisos Basin weather station.

I'm a simple guy.  I like to watch the weather channel for a couple of days before I go.  Gives the big picture, no pun intended.

That is very cool.  I use weather underground more than others for my local weather predictions.  I really like all the local weather stations they have on the site.  Also very cool.

All of these alternate weather sites get their data feeds from the US Weather Service. May as well go to the source...

The PJ weather station thingy said it was in the 90's? No way....musta been a typo. Was maybe mid 70's in the afternoon here.
Last night the wind was incredible. I thought I was going to wake up in OZ!  It died down a bit but now is picking up again.....Unfortunately all we have to block the cold air from Canada is a barbed wire fence!

WeatherMole uses data from NOAA for a given set of coordinates.  Not sure if it's any more or less accurate than any other method, but I find it more fun. :icon_biggrin:

Hey folks...
I just found a really neat site that has live storm chaser feeds (when there are storms and the chasers out out).

Check this out:

http://www.severestudios.com/livechase

Also, if you are a real weather nut, be sure to subscribe to weatherbrains podcast on iTunes, or listen to it here:

Not quite BIBE weather info - but I know there are a number of people on the board from central and south Texas, so I thought I would share this information about SA from the www.myweatherpage.com website I visit every now and then.

"Good morning from the soon to be, extension of the Chihuahuan Desert!

For a comparison, Phoenix, AZ has an average rainfall total of 7.78 inches. The all time record for least rainfall in a calendar year for San Antonio is 10.11 inches in 1917.

As suspected, this has been the driest September-May on record for San Antonio, according to our local NOAA people. I sent them an e-mail the other day and here is the cruel data:

San Antonio

Driest September to May 1872 to 2008

1. 2008  6.57  includes Sep 2007 to May 2008
2. 1956  8.89
3. 1948  9.21
4. 1925  9.31
5. 1996  9.32
6. 1989  9.51 "

It's a good thing for SA the aquifer was relatively high going into the drought, or things could be really awful.

Still...I am amazed that the record wasn't just broken, but pretty much shattered.

Richard, what's the link for those weather stations?
Chisos Basin
Panther Junction
South Rim (temporary station)
Big Bend Area stations
You can also get a text summary for the past 24 hours that includes a lot more weather stations (Castolon, Persimmon Gap, etc) that aren't on the MESO network:
http://www.srh.noaa.gov/maf/version.php?pil=RTPMAF&cwi=1&n=0
or http://www.crh.noaa.gov/product.php?site=IND&product=RTP&issuedby=MAF
