Got to start somewhere!!!
« on: May 26, 2009, 07:31:18 PM »
First off what a cool website!  Thanks for putting this together.

Some basics about me.  I was recently laid off from my job so I have some time thus will be traveling alone.  I have been to most of the NPs in the country and have not been to Big Bend and has always been high on my list.  I do a ton of photography.  I love camping.  Recently purchased a 2006 4Runner 4x4 with brand new Michelin Cross Terrain tires (primarily highway use but pretty stout.)  Have had a lot of 4x4 experience but it has been a while.  Planning on sleeping in the back of the 4R with the windows down or mostly down.  I would like to head down this week sometime.

My question really is what is the best places/places to go for at least three nights off the beat n path as well as some of the mainstream stuff? I dont want to get to radical with the vehicle etc but would love a neat place for some evening/morning photography and some half day hikes etc.  I am so daunted by this park!! So much to learn and try to grasp!

If I have missed any key facts please ask!!  I really look forward to learning and exploring.

Regards,

Ethan

you could head out to Mariscal mine area. Its fairly simple to get to and only a few sections of rutted road. but always ask the rangers for current conditions before heading out there. I made it back there in my 2wd Trailblazer.

The mine area offers some really interesting photo ops. The buildings of the mine faces east which will make for a good sunrise shot. There are a few drive up to back country sites you could camp at (Fresno, Solis#1, 2 or 3, Talley#1) that will put you close to the Mine for a short morning drive for sunrise. Not much traffic out here so be well prepared with plenty of food and water. temps get smoking hot out there this time of year and ZERO shade.

Now for main stream stuff you could do Lost Mine Trail, Window trail, maybe Emory peak, its a pretty steep climb. for birding shots I have always had good luck in Rio Grande Village on the south east side of the park, Cottonwood Camp ground on the south west side and the Sam Nail Ranch area.
Not sure if the stairs to Santa Elena canyon have been repaired or not, but its still worth the drive down there to see the canyon.

The Terlingua Cemetery is always a favorite for photographers and visitors alike. Its not far outside the west entrance of the park. When in Terlingua, the Starlight Theater is the place to be, great food and cold drinks. Pay showers at the Big Bend Motor in. Gas here as well.

there is a gas station near the park headquarters @ panther junction (snacks, drinks ice as well) , and one down in Rio Grande Village. At RGV there is a little bigger store with some general supplies food stuffs, cold drinks and so on with pay showers and laundry.

Enjoy.... make sure you post your trip report and photos when you get back,

James
