So, a club dragging floating gray head, just one among the many wonderful sites you'll see in the Chisos.

Is there a "Boot Spring" near the Colima or Boot Canyon Trail???

Yes, Boot Spring is about 100 yards from the Colima/Boot Canyon junction.

DPrather, I recall you posted on another thread that the Colima Trail was “magical”. Sure seems that way!

That's what I thought but I wanted to confirm before I posted a reply about the legend about Boot Spring...

The story goes that the Spanish General, Jose del Ugalde, battled an Apache tribe on Good Friday in 1797 in the Chisos Mountains after they had stolen his horses and cattle. The battle took place near Boot Springs and the Spanish ultimately won. General Ugalde named the spring Agua Dolores (which means something like "water of pains" or "Sorrowful Watering Place"? - but I think it was to signify that the battle was close to Good Friday).

All-gray hair, pallid face, feet shuffling along the trail, dragging one trekking pole limply behind....that was my astral projection, still trying to complete the OML in a day.

...but I've never felt comfortable in Boot Canyon or Colima at night.  That area has always given me the heebie jeebies even in the day time.

I'm not familiar the Boot Canyon or Colima sites.  What is it about those that you find disturbing?

I am afraid that we are failing.

The Colima-Trail Foot-Shuffling Apparition has zero panache.

We HAVE to come up with  better name for this phenomena!
Leave "quit" at the car.  Embrace the trail as your friend.  Expect to enjoy yourself, and to be amazed.

KerriM, I don't think anyone knows for sure which spring it was that Ugalde named after his skirmish with the Apaches. The geographic descriptions given are vague, but point more toward one of the two Juniper springs. Me dos centavos,

In what book is the Ugalde story told?

In what book is the Ugalde story told?

Springs of Texas, vol.1 - Gunnear M. Brune 2002
And it's in one more book...I'll have to check when I get home.

I could never figure out why you would want to camp at Colima when you could be camping on the Rim.  However, it might be worth trying out now to see what all the excitement is about.

THAT is a wonderful book. Few can afford their own copy, but if you like Texas history, you have to get hold of a copy and read it.

My opinion is that, especially in the summer, the Colima sites are  shaded and cooler.  They are also closer to Boot Pipe.

Close - but not quite.

We need to add more flavors of menace and threat, and also something that reflects the Hispanic influences of the Border.

Are we all aware that in Spanish, hechizo can refer to the magical and spectral?

May all our trails be haunted!
