Here are some links to a hammock forum, with differences of opinion just like this forum. The consensus among these avid hammockers seems to be that with the right trees and the right equipment (i.e. wide straps), damage is minimal or for all practical purposes nonexistent, but that with soft-barked trees and without proper equipment damage can occur even from one night.
