Advice Wanted - Trip August 2017
« on: July 07, 2017, 07:47:28 PM »
In August 2017, I will be visiting Big Bend for the first time. I know I want to camp. However, I am trying to figure out whether I should set up camp at a campground or buy a permit for backcountry camping. Which do you all prefer? Do I need to make a reservation for a  campground?

Also, what were your absolute must see things at Big Bend?

Hello and welcome to the board.

There was a recent thread with many suggestions and considerations for a 1-2 day August itinerary.

How long will you be in the park? Because of the heat, you'll want to do most of your hiking in the Chisos.

I roamed and rambled, and I foller'ed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts
And all around me a voice was a'sounding
This land was made for you and me

My backpacking amigo and I went last August - and had a blast!!

The High Chisos were excellent - cool, and with showers.  We camped at the Boot Canyon sites.  Early mornings were shrouded with fog.
Leave "quit" at the car.  Embrace the trail as your friend.  Expect to enjoy yourself, and to be amazed.

Do I need to make a reservation for a  campground?

Not likely. August is a quiet time of year...I don't even believe reservations are available in the summer

The Chisos in summer are a great choice. Here are some ideas....

+2 on the Chisos in August.  And if you like birds, the variety and occasional surprises are wonderful. Can't beat the hummers. And with the summer rains, should be plenty of water up there. As for the lowlands, best to visit them by car rather than on foot. Just too hot for anything other than very short hikes.
