Spring Break campground issues
« on: February 25, 2016, 06:00:08 PM »
Hey all,
I'm quickly approaching a two-person trip to Big Bend from March 13th-18th. I'm thrilled to go, but must admit I'm getting pretty nervous about finding campgrounds, given the spring break rush. I'm going with a novice backpacker, so the plan was to do a fairly easy/relaxed route up around the high chisos, and maybe into blue creek canyon for one night. I was initially looking to try for SW 3 or SW4, LM1, and then down into blue creek for some zone camping, but am worried about finding any places at all to camp in high chisos, now that I've heard a lot of chatter about how busy it'll be. Any advice from the experts about if we can expect to find any high chisos campsites available, and which one's we might have a good shot at? Also, if not, what would you suggest we do? I was thinking a decent alternate trip might be starting by going down into blue creek canyon, then through to fresno creek, then back up blue creek canyon to our car in the basin (I was advised against an OML with a novice), but an out and back is always less attractive than a loop in my mind.

Anyways, I'd love some advice or reassurance, or at least to hear the music if I need to hear it. Alternatively, is there another place in the park we should go (other than setting out from chisos)?

Any and all words of wisdom are appreciated. Thanks!

If you do a night or two of zone camping first, you shouldn't have a problem getting a site in chisos on your permit.

Great, thanks! We'll maybe drop into blue creek first then and try to work back up to chisos for the rest then. Cheers!

There's also Big Bend Ranch State Park next door, which isn't nearly as crowded.
