I do Jeep in the Bend and can say the best tires I've used are Goodyear MTR's. I've had BFG mud terrains, Mickey Thompson MTZ and a few others over the years. The BFG, TKO 2 did good, but I'm extremely hard on tires. I've ripped the sidewalls of them all, but the MTR has been the best, the BFG, the worst. But again, I do things in my Jeep most sane folks would never do. And its driven daily.

Thanks, Txlj, that's good feedback from the field. And to the OP - gas, maybe, just for peace of mind even though you're very unlikely to need it, but definitely bring a plug kit.

Since I mostly have a central base and travel from their, I dont carry gas with me as I really dont get too far from camp and always have others with me. We keep gas in camp but everyone in our group carries,
basic first aid kit, air compressors, 12 volt, plug kits, fire extinguisher and CB radios.

Only carry an external source of gasoline if you are servicing a motor scooter or motorcycle. Fill your tank up at PJ or RGV . Putting around the park would take days to burn a tank. Purchase your fuel from the park plus other supplies. The concessions need the business. We want them their, never know when you might forget something and need to purchase on sight.

This last trip to the State Park, I took 8 gallons extra, just in case.
We topped off in Marfa, drove down Casa Piedra Road into the park, wheeled around for 2 days on long trails and the main roads.
I used just over half a tank, so I took the weight out of my rotopax and topped the tank off for the next 2 days.
We left up Casa Piedra to Marfa, topped off and continued east.

Didn't "Need" the xtra fuel, but it was good to have just in case.
Water and other recovery gear is just as, if not more essential down in the area.
