Black Gap road question
« on: November 27, 2012, 10:32:28 AM »
Drove Black Gap road (if you call that driving) a couple weeks ago and was wondering, soon after you climb past the spring thereís a well traveled path/road that hooks back to your left, thereís no sign and I donít have my $18 Topo map in front of me, on Google maps it appears to just go around the hill and dead end.  Is this a camp site or an overlook?  I had the driving guide with me and it wasnít mentioned in there.  We did run into several (3) backpackers a mile or so further south (offered them water, one of them was in his 70ís)  they were walking north and said they were almost to their destination, however it wasnít close to anywhere I would call a destination.  We visited the Mines and took RR east back to hardtop, we were out there all day and saw one other vehicle, a black Wrangler he had the top on, windows up and the AC blasting.  Got a another trip planned for Feb.

Glen Springs cemetary maybe?  It sounds likely, it would be on the left if you are headed south.

On the attached brochure, it appears that it is indeed the Cemetary
"Rugged isolation in a Jeep with the top down, doors off, sweaty, dusty, listening to your flavor of tunes, immersed in the most beautiful and beguiling desert mountains in all of the Southwest, the Sierra Quemada. Nothing short of spiritual cleansing. " D. Locke

Thanks everyone, Iíll have to check it out next time.
It was an interesting trip, fell right between the Chili cook-off and your BB Bender get-together.
We hiked the grapevine hills trail and I pointed out the sign that was put up after that fellow got off trail wondered across the road into the desert and died and wouldnít you know it on the dusty drive back to the road a park ranger flagged us over and ask if we were the couple who had called in and reported being off trail and lost, we said no but there was a truck in the trailhead parking area and we didnít see anyone on the trail.  He went on to relate the same story I had just told my wife.  We didnít see any aircraft in the area later that day so I suppose he found them, lucky for them thereís a good cell signal in those hills.
No end to the adventures in BB.
