Castolon River Road Question
« on: June 25, 2019, 07:27:52 PM »
I am a NOOB to the site.  1st post.   I visited BBNP in May 2019 for my first time.
On my way home to Houston I was already planning return visit.
Not sure if there is a introduce yourself page but...

on google map there is a Castolon River Backcountry Road that starts a little north of Cottonwood Campground and eventually meets up to Old Maverick Road.
Is this a legal road to travel?   or is it off limits?   any highlights along route?

searched this site,  youtube and google and no mention of it.

thanks
M

Google has bad habits and leads people astray. There are many old roads in the park, and that is one, however it is not sanctioned for vehicle travel.

Definitely an old road. Google maps didn't used to show it, or the service road with a loop. I wonder what it services...  :eusa_think:

Im not positive but I think the service road may be for the dry dump.

google maps sure shows a lot of the old roads that are off limits to vehicle traffic these days. The park map will be the best source of roads you can drive on.

There are plenty of back country roads to fill your time. Just be very cautious of black gap road, its in te worse condition I have ever seen it in, and the park never maintains it, just users.

Could this be the elusive "Hartung's Road"?  ???
