Paint Gap vs OOR: How much clearance is enough?
« on: January 29, 2019, 01:48:28 PM »
I have an F-150 XLT 2WD.  Specs say it has 8.5" ground clearance.  About a year ago, I drove the Paint Gap Rd and, well, I kept feeling like I needed slightly more clearance.  When I return in March, I am interested in trying the whole OOR. I have done the south end to ET and back and had no problems with it.  My question is, should I have enough clearance? From all the reading I've done, OOR in 2WD looks more than doable provided it is dry. It's probably also the most heavily traveled of the "primitive" roads in the park.  Is Paint Gap just that rutted that I would frequently have rocks hitting the bottom of the truck?

I have done both in 1998 and 2011 F150 XLT's.  But parts of OOR, depending on if and when it was last maintained, have to driven very carefully and with a certain level of skill in picking your path.  There can be some pretty good steps to deal with and on the north end some of the stream bed crossings can be a bit difficult.  Worst case you can always turn around.
