How long does it take?
« on: January 05, 2016, 09:28:12 PM »
My wife and I will be  headed to BBNP early February.  We'll be in a Toyota pickup and plan to do some driving on the back roads.  We are both in good shape and will be moving along at an average pace, both while hiking and driving.  With that said, I'm just curious how long the following few journeys would take at a casual+ speed with a few stops to take in the sights:

1. The hike from MV trailhead to Randell's Overlook (and back).  We will begin our trip with this hike!

2.  The drive from Rio Grande Village to Mariscal Mine.  Depending on how long #1 takes, I'm hoping to grab a campsite near the mine the same day.

3.  Driving from Mariscal mine area to pine canyon, avoiding black gap road (it sounds like it gets a bit narrow in places).

I'm sure I'll have more questions regarding our itinerary once I've gotten some feedback here.  Thanks!

1. About 4 or 5 hours.
2. About an hour or so. Get Fresno campsite. Awesome!
3. If you go by way of RR and Glenn Springs, probably two hours if you stop and smell the roses for a few minutes.

That's perfect.  We'll hit the MV trailhead first thing in the morning after getting our passes.  Sounds like we can comfortably make it to Fresno that same day, maybe with a soak at the hot springs even.  We're planning to camp at pine canyon the next night, and at that pace we should be able to hike the pc trail with plenty of time to spare.

Is this your first trip to BB?  The trip out to Randell's Overlook is a bit tricky for even some with desert hiking experience.  I know I made a wrong turn the first time out there, and just a few weeks ago another seasoned BB hiker had trouble with navigation too.

Also, if it is your first time, you are missing the Basin area for hikes.

I believe the biggest mistake people make in BB is trying to do too much in one trip.  Permit office opens at 8am.  Drive to Randell's trailhead takes 30+ minutes from Panther Junction.  Drive out to Mariscal Mine is 1.5 hours once on river road.  Sun sets at 6:15.  You may do better with staying up in Pine Canyon 2 nights in a row and driving on pavement as much as possible.

First Russian Collusion, then Mueller, then Obstruction, then illegal payment to Stormy Daniels, then tax returns. Now no formal vote on impeachment for a 30 min. phone call to Ukraine

No crime. No evidence, just more secret investigations

Thanks Elhombre.  This will not be our first trip out there, but it will be the first time we've camped in the park or had a vehicle worthy of the back roads.  You hit on two big concerns of mine though.  I only mentioned the first two nights of our visit, because those are the only two nights we will be camping there.  In all, we will spend the first two nights camping, then the next two in lodging in terlingua.  We also have a fifth day that so far we are leaving open to do whatever.  After your response I thought it might be better to begin our trip with a basin visit, hiking the lost mine trail, and ending the day at pine canyon campsite.  The following morning we could hike the pine canyon trail, then rather than stay in pc another night like you suggested, we would drive on down to the mines and hopefully stay at Fresno.  The following morning, day 3, we would drive down to rio grande village.  At that point we will have had a couple of days in the park to get a better idea of whether we want to tackle Randell's overlook or have a more leisurely in that area.  I suspect we will opt out of the overlook, honestly.  That night we will spend outside the park, then will return the next day to visit the Santa Elena canyon area.  The next day we might return to the park, or we might do some sightseeing somewhere else in the area.

El Hombre is being wise.  If you're not prepared in every way, you may get into trouble.  I over estimate my plans all the time.  Make your plans, just be wise enough to know when to change them and wise enough to know what to change them to. Do that, and you may get to everything; you may get to little more than a relaxing few minutes watching the sunrise or you may do more than expected.  The beauty of the Bend is, all of those are good things.
