west river road
« on: July 02, 2015, 08:25:42 AM »
How long would it take of course driving slow, stopping to check stuff out, let the kids run wild to drive west river road? Thinking about a night at glen spring to cotton wood for a shower. My understanding the only place to shower is RGV, CottonWood, and sillwell? I can handle being stinky but no one wants a stinky wife. :icon_eek:

The only place in the park for showers is RGV and the lodge if you ask at the desk in the morning before they clean the rooms, they charge you for some clean towels.

Of course there are showers in Study Butte
temperatures exceed 100 degrees F
minimum 1 gallon water per person/day
no shade, no water

A day and a half in the car without a shower makes you stinky?  Heard of deodorant?

No said what we were doing in the car...

We have lost mine trail planned for day one after getting permits and setting up camp. Next morning doing pine canyon trail, then the window evening. Next day is drive and rest muscles and get a bath. Might have to pack up on day 3 and do old ore ending in RGV doing the hot springs, and ernest tinaja and boquilles canyon. Then back up to la noria or ernest tinaja to camp that night. Day 4 river road to black gap, stop and mariscal mines. Then river road west. Not sure if we should pick a camp along river like the loop one(which had cool pics on here) or continue to cottonwood. Day 5 ross maxwell scenic drive with burro messa and other side stops along the way.

Just an FYI---the lodge no longer allows people to take showers in vacated rooms. At least that is what I was told in late June....."water shortage, blah blah blah.  The only place to take a shower is RGV."

Dirty Mike, you didn't say when you intend on going on this trip, but if it's in the next couple of months, Cottonwood campground will be closed.
Wake me when it's time to go.

We are leaving 14th. Good info. I thought only the stores were closed. RGV for showers it is. Looks like there has been rain out there in the park. I have 4 wheel drive but stock tires.... They tend to turn into glazed donuts in mud.  :banghead: They are listed as ALL TERRAINE.... but i been in a lot of mud with them and they are not impressive. Have not been stuck... Thank the good lord.  :eusa_pray: BFG AT rugged trail. Is river road going to be to slick? It is very capable off road vehicle. Has locking diff which can be a life saver. I cant wait for these tires to wear down so I can get some more more real tires and get rid of the stock.

The roads tend to dry quickly out there, and it often rains in one area and not the other. Odds are good that the roads will be fine. If it does rain the River road can be very muddy.

Slick mud is fun. Deep soggy bottomless muddy bogs not so much. Good to hear they dry out quick. Figured as much being a desert. How many hours is a easy pace trip with stops for sights and letting kids run around?

Warning, there's a rule about that (or soon will be now that you've identified something new to regulate).
