Title: Could be a really low water year, depending on Mexico
Post by: mule ears on May 25, 2018, 05:05:01 PM
Good article in the NY Times (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/05/24/climate/dry-rio-grande.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Fus&action=click&contentCollection=us&region=stream&module=stream_unit&version=latest&contentPlacement=6&pgtype=sectionfront) about the state of the Rio Grande this year, when I was there in Feb. it did not run below Las Cruces.

One good tropical system over the Conchos watershed changes things pronto.

Remember this one?

Absolutely remember that historic flood but it can't happen every year and the long term view for New Mexico doesn't look good

It was looking pretty thin at Boquillas crossing last week. The crossing looked like a ditch across a creek. For the first time that I can remember I didn't go down to Santa Elena Canyon. We just passed through the parking lot. It was 106 and there were quite a few cars there so I reluctantly skipped the short walk to the river. A few days later we were down at the Boquillas overlook and I was surprised by how low the river was.

Did a Lower Canyons trip last week with a longtime river guide who said it may have been the lowest he'd ever seen. Lots of "canoe assisted hiking" the first couple of days before the springs added some CFS.
