How many miles a day can I canoe?
« on: February 25, 2009, 11:30:12 PM »
Just curious but how many miles per day could one accomplish. Would it be a stretch to paddle from Lajitas to RGV in 5 1/2 days??? I believe eighteen miles a day could accomplish this feat. Is that too many miles even for an experienced canoer/kayaker in a day to accomplish?? Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks again.

I would talk to one of the river guide services in Terlingua and see how the river is flowing.  Otherwise your mileage seems reasonable.  Jan Forte is usually more than helpful:

On downriver trips, I usually average 4 mph except in BiBe when it's about 3mph because of all the looking and sightseeing. That's in a loaded kayak. A canoe would probably be around the 3mph figure so it could easily be done with time to explore.

Well I think I did Cottonwood to RGV in 4.5 days.  Check out my entry.

In missouri and in Big Bend I have done 30 miles in a day.  I used to love doing 20+ miles when I was younger and more stubborn.

When you stick to the water currents and paddle a steady amount, working towards efficiency and the long haul, you can rack up the miles.
