I picked up this book at Front Street Books in Marathon for two reasons: (1) It is partially set in the Big Bend region and (2) the author is also the editor of Texas Monthly. Unfortunately, I was a little disappointed and would only give it 3 (out of 5) stars.
The books is half fact and half fiction, alternating between the two every other chapter. Basically, it is about Silverstein's travels in Texas, Mexico, and Louisiana as he tries to become a journalist. I enjoyed the chapters on Marfa and Ambrose Bierce in the beginning of the book, as well as the final chapter (set in Terlingua) but was not too impressed with the other chapters. There is a chapter set in New Orleans where the author looks for Jean Lafitte's treasure that is downright hokey. A few chapters set in Mexico are alright, but one dealing with the Carerra Panamerica car race gets bogged down in details and is just boring.
Bottom line: if you come across a copy, it's a short book that can be read in a few hours, so go for it.
