How Come It's Called That?
« on: September 11, 2007, 09:32:40 PM »
I ordered a copy of the book "How Come It's Called That? Place Names in the Big Bend Country" by Virginia Madison and Hallie Stillwell, and it came in today.  Wow!  What a great book thus far about the history and names of the places in the Big Bend and Trans-Pecos country.

Casa Grande...the book references the quote you have on your virtualbigbend.com website from Ludwig Bemelsman.  I had never heard of him until visiting your virtualbigbend.com website and now, reading it in the book ties it all together!

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about Big Bend and the Trans-Pecos region.

And it's easily available from the BigBendBookStore.org website!  I got my Dad a copy a few years back as a gift.

Hi Shanea!
Yep...seems we need a BIBE gathering in one of the nearby state parks, similar to what you did there in East Texas a few weeks ago.

Hi BBH!  I read that earlier this year.  It's really good.  Hallie had such a conversational style of writing.  Wouldn't it have been great to meet her?

Another book that you might want to look for is Postcards From Ed; Dispatches and Salvos from an American Iconoclast.  Ed. David Peterson.  I LOVED it.  It is a collection of postcards and letters Edward Abbey wrote over his lifetime, everything from love letters to letters to friends, to letters to editors, congressmen, and lots more.

I just completed my read of Hoe Come It's Called That?  I thought it was great.  Very funny at times.  I wish it would be updated for current times.  Towards the end the lady's write about the air force installments in the area.  The same air force runways that you can barley see on Google earth now.  Its funny how nature swallows up what man tries to create.

Its neat to see how things have come and gone over the years.

Favorite quote of the book.
"There are hot springs near Ruidosa where people go to take baths which are said to cure everything except laziness." - How come It's Called That

You should take time and read this book,

That's a great little book. I picked up a copy of it in the Langtry Mall.
