Pretty good book.  Nice insight into life in the early park.  I'd like to find the swimming hole and waterfall she talks about on Ward Mountain.  Also, has anyone ever seen a copy of Peter Koch's movies "Big Bend, Life in a Desert Wilderness" or "Desert Gold"?  I'm really interested in seeing those two!  I can't believe he made it through Santa Elena on a raft of century plant stalks!!

I have searched and searched for Peter Koch's two movies.  Hopefully I can find it in the library on campus...UT Austin has much on Big Bend; I hope to find some of the archeological surveys done for the NPS, but I may need to have someone with the proper credentials to get this for me (Chemists get poo poo'd by these guys...).

If I find it, I'll let you know!

I loved this book.  It is a good primer for an upcoming trip!  How cool it would be to live in the park so long!

I'll Gather My Geese by Hallie Stillwell is another great book.

Ah Big Bend, we will soon return to reacquaint ourselves in our ritual of blood, exhaustion and dehydration. How can we resist the temptation to strip ourselves of the maladies of civilization?

I did some extensive research last month on this for the group.  I have talked to Sul Ross University library archives and Big Bend Museum.  I have the contact of a grad student who has seen the films (physical) in the archives at Sul Ross.  I plan on contacting her in a week or so when I get less busy at work.

The big question is:  if we can get the film how do we convert it into a usable digital format?

I will followup with what I find out.

I also just finished Lizards on the Mantle, Burros at the Door and enjoyed it but not as much as J. O. Langford's wonderful book, A Homesteader's Story:  Big Bend.  I thought Etta Price's book was a wonderful memoir, which is what it is billed as, but did not give enough detail except for Hot Springs.  She gave a lot of detail of Hot Springs which was so very interesting after having visited there this past December for the first time.  Reading both books after visiting there was a real treat.  Both books were interesting and now I guess I'll go to Hallie Stillwell's book.  As I read "Lizards" I was struck by how little Price mentions her husband, except that he was never there.  The only time I remember her mentioning him was during a short liaison on her trip back to Cincinnatti.  Perhaps travel wasn't then what it is now but I would think he would have wanted to be with his wife on Christmas, birthdays, etc.  Did he ever spend time in Hot Springs?  I don't think she once mentioned a letter from him either.  Of course, one couldn't miss in the Prologue that they later divorced.  That was sad to me after all this.

In response to person inquiring about the movie "Desert Gold" just found it for you for $.99 at a wonderful used book, video, media site Alibris.com which I have used for years.  Can't always find everything there but when you do can find some great bargains.  I just bought 3 Big Bend books recommended on this site for a total of $7.92 plus reasonable shipping.  And this is not an advertisement...:-)

I can't seem to find the movie on the website you mentioned.  Could you post a link to the movie?

I bought "My Goose is Cooked" by Hallie Stillwell, "Hiking Big Bend NP", & "The Big Bend: History of the Last Texas Frontier" for a total less than $8 plus about $10 in shipping.

I'm pretty sure that's not the Peter Koch film. That's a "B+ Western" from 1936. The Koch film is a travelogue from the early 1950's (I think).

According to Pete Koch's grandaughter - the only way you might be able to find a
copy of Desert Gold is through the Sul Ross Archives.
