novels set around Big Bend?
« on: May 05, 2015, 07:28:25 AM »
Hi y'all.  I just got back from my first trip to Big Bend, and I'm still recovering from how different it was from urban Louisiana life.  We loved it!

Since then I've read Laurence Parent's Death in Big Bend out of curiosity, and it has occurred to me that I'd like to read something fictional set in the area, but haven't had a lot of luck finding something.  Part of my problem is that I like contemporary fiction that's not particularly dark, and though I've found a couple of novels set in West Texas, they seem to be older and dark in their subject matter (Bad Boy, which is more of a memoir & The Killer Inside Me).  Does anyone know of a good novel that's not so disturbing as some of the true stories in Parent's book and is relatively new?  This might be a tall order, but thank you!

Here's a good read.  Rawles has lived in Big Bend and Boquillas for many years.  It's his first novel and quite well done!

Thanks, Al!  I just realized I probably should have posted this in the book reviews forum; I will check it out as well!

Appreciate the recommendation!

You might like the Nevada Barr murder mysteries.  She was a park ranger and they are all set in National Parks, some she worked in.  The Track of the Cat is in GUMO and is pretty good, it was her first one.  Borderline is in Big Bend and is fair.  They are murder mysteries but not gory and she describes the parks and places pretty well.

Thanks!  Since they aren't gory, I might be able to enjoy them.  I'll check them out.

It is not set entirely in the park, but 'The Case of the Hook-Billed Kites' by J.S. Borthwick  reaches resolution in the Big Bend.
For every complex problem there is a solution that is simple, obvious, and wrong.
