An enjoyable book. Terlingua's citation above is really the only SAR story described in the book. Lots of alien apprehensions. Overall, this man's account is an eye-opener to life along the border and in the Big Bend area 50 years ago. Even in the 50's there were still wax camps, mercury mines, and operating stores and ranches.
One favorite area of the author in BBNP was the McKinney Mountains and specifically McKinney Springs. He said it was about the only reliable water along the Smuggler's Road (I assume he meant the Old Ore Road) from Boquillas northward for about 60 miles. From a topo map, I have found an area called McKinney Hills with two places marked as McKinney Springs. One has ruins nearby.
