Signed copy of 'Beneath the Window'
« on: December 06, 2016, 06:54:14 PM »
I'd seen a number of comments here about 'Beneath the Window', and recently found an author-signed copy on the 'zon.  Affordable too.  Great read, flew by in a couple days.

I agree with others that it has its sad notes, being that it leads right up to the time when landowners sold to the park service.  But I got what I wanted: a clear, gritty picture of just how difficult life was, even as recently as WWII.  As widely spaced as folks were, they relied on each other and had great community.  I'll not spoil much, but there's an incident where they experience major injury, and even in Alpine - at that time there still was no hospital.

As I've walked through ruins in the park (with all the modern conveniences - marked trails, GPS, filtration, freeze-dried food etc), I've still felt the desolation.  Books like this take it deeper.  I'm about to take my kids for their first BBNP trip, and I hope they'll appreciate just how comfortable we have things.  Ciao, y'all.
