The Tecate Journals - Seventy Days on the Rio Grande
« on: November 20, 2008, 11:54:00 PM »
By bike, raft and canoe author Keith Bowden ran the river from El Paso to the Gulf. He's a Spanish speaker who straddles both sides of the stream in telling tales that mix culture, history and river-ratting. If you've read John Graves' "Goodbye to a River" about his trip down a stretch of the Brazos, you'll find similarities. Published by Mountaineer Books. I got mine at Barton Warnock Center.

Thanks for posting!  I had a chance to read a copy of the book earlier this year.  Could hardly put it down and almost read it from end to end in one sitting.  It is a GREAT adventure story!

I recently finished reading this book,  I liked it and have the following comments:
- I really enjoyed this book but felt like Keith Bowden really did push his luck making this trip.  I doubt it would have gone as well as it did without his ability to speak Spanish so well.  His knowledge of local people also seems to have helped him get out of several confrontational situations which might have ended badly if he hadn't meshed with the Mexican's so well.
- I don't know if he could repeat this trip today, it seems like the boarder is even more violent than it was a year or so ago.  He had several confrontations with Mexicans along the river and the BP could have arrested him several times but didn't.   That's lucky.
- I would have liked to have had him expand a little bit on the section of river in the Big Bend especially in the National Park.
Overall I liked the book and would give it a rating of 8/10... TWWG

I know it is a big bump, but I just finished this not too long ago. I agree, the trip would not be possible today. Which is why the book will be so valuable.
Everything is in walking distance if you have enough time.

Another bump. I read this book after seeing this post and was very glad for the experience. It's a great read.

Also: wanted to pass along that a Texas Tribune staffer has begun a digital journal of his trip from the headwaters of the Rio Grande with intent to travel the entire distance to the Gulf. He is making daily updates to this website:

Highly recommend it!

Lots of bumps. Glad yall liked the book. A year or so ago at Center for Big Bend Studies annual conference I met the guy that Bowden was mailing his updates to. Small river. Good to hear about this McDonald guy doing the hike. I also doubt Bowden could do it these days, and I expect McDonald's walk is going to get real interesting.
