i've recently finished two books which don't actually take place in big bend national park, but come close. william least heat-moon passes through part of the big bend country in his travels around the country in Blue Highways. it's an excellent read. and God's middle finger: into the lawless heart of the sierra madre - is an interesting account of one man's journey south of the rio grande. for general reading enjoyment, i can also recommend the early tony hillerman mysteries - which all take place in the southwest.
