Basin Campground in November, 4-person tent
« on: July 16, 2015, 04:16:19 PM »
Hello All -

What a great resource for Big Bend, especially the seamed googleview Basin Campground map with updated numbers. ( I understand there may still be some errors/unknowns )

I'm planning a family tent weekend around November 11-15, which coincides with a new moon and a trip to the Observatory, and have been looking at the reserve campsites with Canopies in the Basin Loops. 60 looks perfect, but is first come, first serve. 21, 29 look to have enough room for a larger tent AND some relative isolation. 47 as mentioned on these forums doesn't have room for a larger tent. I am wondering if some of the first-come sites will be available in November if we arrive fairly early, and we could possibly grab one and free up the reserved spot?

We've hiked/camped as a couple remotely, and have driven through the remote areas by 4x4 with the family, will be family hiking with Basin as the hub this time. Getting out all the old maps, books.

As an amateur astronomer I can heartily recommend site 21. Reserve it if you can!

Here's an old photo showing my scope on the upper part of site 21...the side toward Casa Grande.

Site 60

I squeezed in a 9' x 9' tent after minor trimming of some overhanging catclaw.

Looks like #21 will be the reserve and we hope that #60 will be available. Both look great.
Thank you very much for the photographs and your time, much appreciated. Will keep checking in for more sites and reading the trails threads.

I've camped 60 several times and it is great. Have never snagged 59 (also non-reservable) but I imagine that it is even better, being a little higher and more secluded. 57 is OK: no shelter but has a table and is large. However it lacks privacy. All are distant enough from the rest room to diminish light pollution and noise.
