Basin campsite around Thanksgiving?
« on: August 20, 2014, 09:39:30 AM »
I'll be arriving on Friday, November 28th, probably around 11AM.  It looks like there are no campsites available to reserve at this time.  What are the chances of getting one of the non reservable sites if I arrive at that date/time?  I would think a lot of people would be leaving that day but not sure.  Also, is that a good time of day to arrive in hopes of getting a site?

Thanks

It'll be a crap-shoot. Your chances would improve greatly if you could get there earlier in the morning. There is usually at least a few sites that turn over each day during holidays, but they are usually snatched up pretty quickly. Check in with the campground host as soon as you get there. He should know if any sites are still open or are going to be open. Also, they usually report the campground as "full" a bit before the last sites are actually filled, so it might be worth it to ask even if the sign says full.

Keep checking the reservation site for any cancellations.

Hello, we too were planning a trip to big bend for Thanksgiving. I have never been to Big Bend before, and I'm a little scare because they have no reserve spots left. We were going to leave the Tuesday night and drive through the night to be there the Wednesday morning, but I'm 12 hours away and scared to get there and there be no open spots available. Does anybody know the chances of use getting there early in the morning and not have any spots the Wednesday before thanksgiving?

I'd say your chances are pretty good, especially if you arrive early.  If not at the Basin then at either Rio Grande Village or Cottonwood campgrounds.

If all else fails you could almost surely get a spot at Stillwell, located just outside the north entrance to the park.
Wake me when it's time to go.

Looks like we will be in Big Bend State Park Tuesday - Friday morning, then we will try to move to Big Bend to the Basin camp ground early Friday. Hope we find a spotFriday morning.
