Title: Camping Logistics / either basin camprground or primitive
Post by: engstrombri on November 23, 2015, 12:14:45 PM
Hey all,

First post here, but I have been a lurker for a while. I went to Big Bend for the first time this year and fell in love. Some buddies and I got to spend some time out at K-Bar camping and hiked all over the park. However, now next week I wanted to take my dad out to the park but have some logistical problems. It is a spur of the moment trip next Thursday and there are tons of campsites open, but nothing in the Lodge. However if I choose the camping route, I only have a two person backpacking tent which would not be ideal to share with the old man. I do have a hammock I could sleep in and let him have the tent, just to get us some extra room. I would just need to know which campsites have this capability. I have seen some sites with metal roofs over the tables that I could probably string up between, but have no clue which sites those are.

If anybody has other suggestions though I am definitely open to hearing them.

Thanks,

Brian :crossedfingers:

Most of the sites are going to have covered tables.  The few that don't are along the outer most edges of the campgrounds.   The sites on the inside are going to have covered tables.

Alternately, you can throw a matt down on the table as well.  I've done that several times myself.

Just to be clear:  the ONLY sites that have covers are in the Basin Campground.  None of the primitive sites do.

For car camping there's no law that you have to use a good tent. Go by Academy or other big box store and pick up a cheap tent that will hold both of you. Either that or let Dad have the tent and you sleep under the stars.  8)
