Chance to get a site on Christmas day
« on: December 16, 2013, 12:43:58 PM »
My wife and I are heading there on Christmas. I have a site booked for that night, but we plan to be there for five nights total, so, basically, we still don't have a site to stay for the remaining four nights.

What is our chance of getting one for the first-come-first-serve sites?

We will get there on Christmas around 4 or so. Not sure if there will be a spot open that night. If so, we probably try to get one that we can settle for five nights. If not, our plan is to try our chance in the next morning.

Any advice?

I read from the other thread that I should check with the host in the morning or so. Is that the right way to do? Also, where can we find the sites for the hosts?

Thank you in advance.

P.S. First time to Big Bend, but this will be our 15th national park that we've visited and camped. Can't wait!

I'd imagine there might be a few people checking out on Christmas Day. As stated in the other thread, the campground host keeps tabs on the status of all the sites and should know which ones are coming open. Check to see if he's at his host site as soon as you can. He'll often be out walking the campground on busy days, so you may have to hunt him down. With luck he'll be wearing his green uniform shirt and be easy to spot.

If you already have a reserved site for one night, you should have a head start on finding an open site early the next morning. I'd advise making friends with the host and maybe he can give you a heads-up the night before.

One other tip: pick up the payment envelope on your way in and have it ready to fill out as soon as you find an available site. Put the receipt tab on the site post to mark it as claimed/reserved. The host will come around and verify the info and mark it as official. The payments that go in the "iron ranger" box aren't checked until some time later. For example, the two times I've paid with a credit card number the charge didn't appear on my account for 3-5 months.

Thank you very much, Richard. This is exactly the info I'm looking for and thank you for the tips.

There were available reservations during the period that I would like to stay, but they would be in three different sites. We don't want to move around too much. Just want to settle as soon as we can.

BTW, if we happen to have options for sites, which ones are considered good locations? Note here that I'm more about location for good view and photography.

Thank you again.

Ditto. Of course, at the time you'll be there, you may not have many choices.

I imagine that. But, of course, we are hoping for the best, while planning for the worst. :)

Site 60 is also good, though it has more slope.

59 and 60 are far away from the generator zone and restrooms. The latter has its pluses and minuses.
