Gettting in late - Probably around 2am
« on: March 25, 2014, 09:54:54 AM »
I will be getting in around 2am Friday morning and looking for a place to camp for that night.  I've looked at the Basis Campgrounds, but nothing mentions late check in.

Are there any suggestions?  I'm very flexible, just looking for somewhere to set camp and stay until 8am.

Thanks  in advance.
Jory

Stop in Marathon and camp at the Marathon Motel ($10).  Get up and head to PJ in the morn.

you can set up in any of the vacant established camp sites when you get there, the camp host will come by in the morning and let you know to check in. Just tell them the time you got in and that you will be filling out the self check in slip, no biggie

For the Basin campground, you register/check in by filling out the form and placing the envelope with your payment in the "Iron Ranger" (that's a metal lockbox that park personnel come by and check later). You can try to find a spot at 2AM, just be courteous and leave your car up at the overflow parking area and walk through the campground to find an empty site. Assuming you find one, then bring your car down and unpack as quietly as you can. You might even forgo the tent and "cowboy camp" under the stars.

Ok.  I just called Marathon Motel.  She said we can get in late, camp and then pay in the morning at 8am.  What great customer service   :high5:

They're good peeps.  Another advantage of this option?  Driving into the park w/ (early morning) light, being able to appreciate the beauty.

And avoiding the local wildlife. Hitting a deer at 1 am is a huge pain in the ass out here.
Remember, folks, it's 100 miles to the closest hospital.

Yep.  Thousands of those Jack Rabbits love to play chicken w/ automobiles at night.  Not fun.  Deer are worse.

I'd be more worried about the nighthawks on the road at night. Drive in late once and they kept flying up from the road and you thought you were about to have one planted in the windshield. We were towing a trailer and had reservations for the RV campground the next day so we just found a spot in RGV campground and dry camped for the night and did the self check-in.

Best part was stopping in the middle of the road at midnight and opening the sunroof and all windows and staring at the stars with all the lights out. Kids were blown away by the number of stars in the sky :)
