I booked our campsite in the basin a long time ago for Thurs-Sun. I couldn't remember what site we had, and with the weather looking like rain, I went back to check and see if we had a covered table. Well, apparently, I booked last weekend instead of this weekend.
I know we can potentially get something walk-up, but unlikely as we won't be getting out there until thurs evening. I know there's always stillwell and the drive in early friday to try and snag something.
Any other suggestions? We weren't planning on backcountry or even backcountry car camping on this trip, but i suppose its an option at this point. We have an SUV, but it won't be making this trip, as it needs some work done, so we'll just be in the car.
Rancho Topanga (http://www.ranchotopanga.com/) between Study Butte and Lajitas is probably the best campground outside the park. There's one in Terlingua as well, along with the Big Bend Resort and Adventures "campground" in Study Butte. You could camp at one of those places Thursday night, then head up to the Basin early Friday morning to see if there's anything open.
coming from Austin, I'll probably save the drive all the way over to Terlingua and stay at Stillwell tomorrow night and then drive to the basin.
