Successful OML--1/25/19 to 1/27/19
« on: January 30, 2019, 12:44:21 PM »
Hi all. More to come soon, including a full trip report with pictures, but for now I wanted to give a quick update on the trail. I did a solo, two night OML starting from Juniper Canyon Road going clockwise. I went across the South Rim instead of dropping into the Basin.
Fresno Creek was running nicely (and what a great spot for lunch on my first day!!), as was Boot Canyon (though I sense that this is typical).  I cached 4.5L at Homer Wilson. On the first night, I picked up the cache and then camped a little less than a mile north at the first established campsite I could find. And the second night I stayed at site NE4. Both sites were great.
The park was nearly empty with the shutdown going on; I didn't see anyone else camping. There was no evidence of any kind of poor stewardship of the park, like what we've seen at Joshua Tree, Yosemite, etc. And then of course I finished the loop to find out that the shutdown had ended a few hours after my hike started, though NPS was still in the process of restoring services.
All in all, it was a great trip. It certainly lived up to its reputation for being a beautiful hike! I'm grateful to everyone who's posted on here, especially for the FAQ by Mule Ears. Also grateful to whoever is responsible for all of the cairns along the Dodson. They were a big help, and I never had any trouble finding my way. I'll be sure to give a nice, long-form report on my trip soon!

Sounds like a great trip!  Yes, I've learned so much from the experienced posters on here as well.  Mule Ears, Steel Frog, and DPrather have great input amongst others.  Thanks for the water report too.  Looking forward to your pics.
