Last post before OML attempt!
« on: December 08, 2019, 10:37:48 AM »
Hey everyone! First I'd like to thank you all for the information y'all provide! Heres my OML attempt agenda which starts by leaving from Houston on Monday. I just want to double check I wont run into any trouble, either getting a permit or out on the trail.
We’re leaving at Monday at 4:30am and caching water at homer Wilson trail head when we get there and hopefully getting backcountry permits and a walk up campsite in the basin.
Then Tuesday we’re leaving from Chisos basin and are going to go clockwise so pinnacles trail then to boot canyon trail then camping at the beginning of the Dodson trail.
Then Wednesday we are doing the Dodson and camping past homer Wilson ranch for the night with our water
Then Thursday morning we’re going up blue creek  to the south rim to camp if we can get the camp spot.
Then Friday night we’re camping in chisos basin campground and going to hot springs and just relax lol.

Looks good, if you are running close on time driving from Houston, I would get your permit first at PJ, then cache water before heading to the Basin.  Sometimes they won't write a permit within a half an hour of closing time.  They should also be able to tell you if there are any spaces left in the Basin, if not they can hopefully get you a close by roadside site like grapevine hills, paint gap or such.

Have a great time and give us a report!

I agree with Mule Ears: get your permit first (you'll pass the PJ visitor center on the way in, anyway), then if Basin campsites are in short supply, go get a campsite (the Basin exit is basically on your way to Homer Wilson), and THEN proceed to Homer Wilson to cache. The HW parking area is very easy to find and the trail down to the bear boxes where you cache is short, paved, and easy to walk, even in the dark.

Frankly, I'll be shocked if you have trouble getting permits or campsites, even in the Basin. You're going mid-week in early December. Outside of the RV campgrounds at Rio Grande Village, I doubt there'll be many people there at that time of year.  The Hot Springs will be a great way to wind up your trip!

Good luck, and let us know how it turns out.

Ncthom, I drove into the basin this morning at 9 am and had no trouble getting a good site. As of this evening, there are still open sites. BTW there's a chance of rain Monday night as a front moves in. Not necessarily a bad thing, just a heads up. Stunning fall weather yesterday today and probably most of tomorrow.
