The OML in June 2013 Backpacker Magazine
« on: May 23, 2013, 08:01:21 PM »
Just opened the recent June 2013 issue and it has a full page spread (pg. 35) on the OML with so many errors that once again one has to wonder have they ever been to the park.  Unfortunately it is not on the web yet.  Here are a few of the glaring incorrect statements:

"Wade through tumbleweeds..."
"...turn left onto Juniper Canyon trail where Boot Springs dribbles underfoot."
"Descend...under 100 foot tall Arizona Cypress trees"
they recommend camping at Juniper Canyon Camp (upper Juniper springs)
"Scan the creek (Fresno) for Sierra Del Carmen white-tail deer."
"Drop into the Smoky Creek drainage...followin g cairns...the trail leaves the wash in 3.5 miles.  From here walk .7 mile to your cache at Homer Wilson Ranch."

 :willynilly:
temperatures exceed 100 degrees F
minimum 1 gallon water per person/day
no shade, no water

Saw this today as well.  LOL

Don't forget the javelin at the top of the pinnacles trail!  And they have the trailhead in the basin labeled as the "Homer Wilson Trailhead".
I like they have you going from your camp at Juniper Springs to your camp a good distance up Blue Creek, that's a LONG day 2!  Also, go in JUNE to avoid the late season thunderstorms!

Personally, I plan my OML trips for July 4th week so I can have a big fire and shoot firecrackers off without the June crowds slowing me down.      :great:

Once it goes digital, you can leave comments/corrections but I doubt they will receive the chastening with grace - pretty snooty group. Any magazine that would publish one of my essays (severely edited) can't be very together.

Yeah -- Backpacker has turned into such a worthless rag. Somewhere about 8 years ago or so (seemingly overnight) the in-depth gear reviews & lengthy trip reports disappeared, replaced by empty, tiny factoids & brief, worthless reports. Suddenly, it took longer to flip through a People mag at the doctor's office than a Backpacker.

Blech.

This OML report sounds like truly irresponsible "journalism." Pity the poor fool who tackles the OML based on this info without doing any other research. And pity the poor rangers who'll have to go out on the SAR...

Awwww man! Why am I always the last one to find out about these things?!
And here I went out to the Old Ore Terminal thinking I could zip-line across the river! :pissed:

Perhaps some links in the comments section of the online version would be prudent.

We'd get to show off our stuff!

Ah Big Bend, we will soon return to reacquaint ourselves in our ritual of blood, exhaustion and dehydration. How can we resist the temptation to strip ourselves of the maladies of civilization?

Well it won't get you to the south rim, but I've always enjoyed jetting on Chimneys Lake. (Don't tell Backpacker magazine  :eusa_shhh: )
