Just heard that the Basin campground was evacuated.  Heard there might have been a lightning strike / fire.  UNCONFIRMED at this point.

Just looked at the webcam picture and it looks wet...so I guess lightning is a possibility.

Maybe you can't see raindrops, but I wouldn't say that was dry.

It's 7:15, and the web cam in the Basin still shows 4:01. :?:  :?:

Can't tell if it's raining, but it sure looks foggy and damp.

Yup, and McDonald's and GUMO webcams are still updating so something is up.

It's raining hard at GUMO.  It was cloudy this afternoon and then it started raining so hard you couldn't even see Guadalupe Peak anymore.

Same thing at McDonald's Observatory - raining hard form 5pm to 6pm when the camera stopped taking photos for the day.

There was actually a really cool pic this morning on the webcam:

Could not stand the waiting...so I had to call the Chisos Mountain Lodge (just got off the phone at 7:41PM).  The lady there said, yes, the campground was evacuated.  There was a fire near the area.

The lodge and cabins were not evacuated and she said they were told they probably would not be.

I asked about rain/lightning...and she replied they had neither...so not sure what may have started it...

Jim...I saw your post yesterday from Big Bend and again today.  Just curious...how are you connecting to the internet out there?

My money is on it being started by a camper dropping a cigarette.  The thorns would probably just grow back thicker and meaner...

The last fire in the Basin was a prescribed burn started just up the slope from the amphitheater.  They didn't take the wind into account;  it went straight up the side of Casa Grande; came farily close to the restaurant.  You can still see some of the  burned trees, etc.
