Fauna you've observed in BBNP
« on: January 28, 2006, 09:18:18 AM »
This is my excuse to put up a photo(not mine) of a Coachwhip(the snake that  launched a massive strike on me).  This is the snake that visitors most often see crossing the road("it was pink!").  The reason this snake is seen more often than many others is because it is an active daytime reptile.  It can tolerate much higher heat levels than most snakes in the Bender.  The Coachwhip is a very fast, alert and aggressive snake. Hope you get a chance to see one.

You know, I can remember days driving close to the Chisos and there were the same lil cotton candy clouds covering them, and all of the various peeps I was with all said the same thing "Aw man, you can't even see them!"......I would just say, "yeah, isn't it beautiful?".......To me anyway, it's what adds to their mystery and beauty......The best part is when you start to drive up basin road and the mountains slowly unfold out of the clouds, and the peeps with you then say..."Oooh awesome!".....over and over again......

I really think I enjoy the Bender more through someone else's eyes......although still breathtaking to me :D

Makes it mysterious indeed, especially when you are climbing right into it:

The BBNP is a great place for wild-life. I haven't (yet) seen any bears, but lots of birds, javelinas, spiders, but so far only one snake, this one in the picture which was sort of sunning itself across Mule Ears trail. It didn't look at all dangerous, but I gave it a wide berth anyway. I wouldn't mind knowing what it was, if it is recognisable from the picture.

I believe that snake to be a Big Bend Patchnose, Chris.  The 4 species of rattlesnakes and the trans-pecos copperhead are the poisonous snakes of any consequences to humans in the Bender.

So, any snake with a rattle and the trans-pecos copperhead pictured here(not mine) are the dangerous ones.

I'd add coachwhips after your story.  Snakes don't have to be poisoinous to be dangerous.  Lots of nasty infections can be picked up after snakebites...
