"The mesa which forms the Texas side of the Santa Elena Canyon is called Mesa de Anguila. The Mexicans along the river say that is is called that because Angulo, whom they believe to have been the last Comanche in the region, lived in caves on this mesa and in Santa Elena Canyon. The caves were called Cuevas de Angulo and the mesa derived its name from this sourceThen there are those who claim that this mesa was named for the eagles which nested there and that its name came from the word aguila, which is Spanish for eagle. Others say that Mesa de Anguila is Spanish for Mesa of the Eels. Still others believe that the name comes from the Spanish Mesa de Angel (Mesa of the Angels)."
I like the Comanche theory. Why? Caves. Like to more about that!
