Mesa de Anguila - place name
« on: March 06, 2006, 09:08:37 PM »
This came up in a post earlier, now I can't find it.  Basicaly the question was, "Why is it called that?".

It got me curious so I started looking around, couldn't find anything on the web.  Then I recalled I have a book, fittingly called "How Come It's Called That?", by Virgina Madison and Hallie Stillwell.

Here's what it has to say about the Mesa de Anguila:

...from page 54...
Quote
"The mesa which forms the Texas side of the Santa Elena Canyon is called Mesa de Anguila.  The Mexicans along the river say that is is called that because Angulo, whom they believe to have been the last Comanche in the region, lived in caves on this mesa and in Santa Elena Canyon.  The caves were called Cuevas de Angulo and the mesa derived its name from this source
Then there are those who claim that this mesa was named for the eagles which nested there and that its name came from the word aguila, which is Spanish for eagle.  Others say that Mesa de Anguila is Spanish for Mesa of the Eels.  Still others believe that the name comes from the Spanish Mesa de Angel (Mesa of the Angels)."

Anyway, just wanted to share.  The book is very interesting by the way.

I love reading that kind of stuff....the Tales of the Big Bend book is kinda the same in that they go into an explanation of something, and give 25 different theories of how it came to be, and never really say which one was the most prevalent, LOL...I guess we can pick the one we like the best! Personally I like the one with the eagles in this one.... :D
