Title: Big Bend Changing Web Page
Post by: ambersdad on April 04, 2012, 05:06:10 PM
Went to the web page this morning to see if a new daily report is up.  It hasn't changed since Friday.   They are revamping everything.  Still have Fridays Daily Report up though.

What they claim is the mesowest weather station for RGV is not. I pasted the coordinates into Acme mapper and it was Santa Elena Canyon.

Ok, the next person to stop by the Visitor Center (any of them) needs to bug them about when they're going to resume updating the Daily Report (http://www.nps.gov/bibe/daily_report.htm) online. While I probably like the particular date for which they have the latest report more than the average visitor, it sure would be nice if they could at least stay within a week of the current date. :icon_rolleyes:

I'll ask when I get a zone permit this weekend.

You may know Texas Tech now has new weather observation stuff at Persimmon Gap--windy there yesterday!

Nice pictures at http://www.mesonet.ttu.edu/temp/PGAP_new/pgap_new.html and some basic info at http://www.mesonet.ttu.edu/site_info/PGAP.html
I have yet to find any page containing actual data for this site, other than this table (http://www.mesonet.ttu.edu/latestobs/rtplbb.txt). Maybe they don't have it fully online yet? It doesn't show up on NOAA's network of sites (http://raws.wrh.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/roman/trend_zip.cgi?radius=100&noho=2&rawsflag=290&zipcode=79834).

Or maybe they're just waiting for the Daily Report to be updated (to bring us back on topic).

...which leads to http://www.mesonet.ttu.edu/5minuteobs/Persimmon%20Gap%20BBNP-03052013.txt

Still not what you normally see from a MESO site, but it's better than nothing.

That's really weird, I know I've seen a more recent one than the one you linked to (November 28, 2012). I was checking in January before my trip and they were up to date because the Mesa closure disappeared after Jan 4th or so. It's really weird that it reverted back to 11/28.

When I checked it at work today, it was for 2/19 (my birthday). At home it's showing 3/4.

Right now the date on the link says March 4th but when I click the link, it downloads the daily report from 11/28. Don't know what that's about.

You can navigate to whatever date you want using the "version" buttons upper right corner

It's about the page being messed up. :icon_rolleyes: You wouldn't think it would be that complicated, but then again, it's all about the bureaucracy. Where's Presidio when we need some snarky commentary?

I'm not seeing any "version" buttons. You sure we're looking at the same page (http://www.nps.gov/bibe/daily_report.htm)?

Rumor has it the agencies have been told to make the sequester as annoying to the public as possible...

There are plenty of other good sources of weather info.   :icon_cool:

That's what I get for not splitting this topic up yesterday.

This page is interesting:

I've just about given up on the BIBE NPS web page.

- Webcams - gone ( I know they are not operated by NPS)

- The daily report is a joke.  :willynilly:

I just checked it and the link said March 4th, 2013 and this is what I was presented with:

Daily Report Wednesday, November 28, 2012, and The Mesa de Anguilla is closed until further notice due to aggressive mountain lion activity.

It just can't be all that hard to update the daily report and maintain the link.

So I have been following this thread and keep checking the daily report and it has always been current, maybe I have a magic computer?   :eusa_think:

It's a trippy webpage. The URL changes from one day to the next from being explicit to being generic. Pretty odd setup. You used to be able to edit the date in the URL in order to see the old reports, say a year ago, but now you cannot. The past no longer exists. 1984 all over again.

Today it shows March 7th for me also, but if click the link anyway and adjust the URL as follows, you get today's report for the 9th:

http://www.nps.gov/bibe/upload/DAILYREPORT-4.pdf (http://www.nps.gov/bibe/upload/DAILYREPORT-4.pdf)

May not work tomorrow!
